Covid-19 Hardship Related Assistance grant 

Sheffield residents who are having difficulties paying for food and other essentials due to the Covid-19 pandemic can apply for an emergency grant via Sheffield City Council.

Applicants do not need to be claiming benefits already and can apply independently via the Sheffield City Council website.
 

What the grant can be used for

The list of items covered by the grant includes:

  • food and housekeeping (groceries, toiletries, baby essentials etc)
  • essential travel costs (job hunting, starting a new job, medical appointments etc)
  • telephone and broadband (mobile phones, top-ups, broadband charge etc)
  • gas and electricity
  • clothing, including school uniforms
  • essential furniture/white goods
  • rent in advance if you are under immediate threat of eviction due to Covid-19 and your landlord agrees to stop the eviction if some or all of your arrears are paid
  • mortgage arrears that you can prove are because of Covid-19

However, please note that it cannot be used for:

  • paying loans, or
  • statutory activities/requirements that either the Council or another public-sector organisation is responsible for delivering
     

Who can apply for the grant?

Eligible applicants include people who:

  • live in Sheffield
  • are struggling to afford food and other essentials due to Covid-19
  • or are indirectly affected eg someone they rely on is no longer able to provide essential support

Note that only one grant will be issued per household unless there are exceptional circumstances.
 

How to apply

Applications can be completed online 

Please note that you will be asked for some personal contact information, along with your NI number and financial information (including a bank statement or other evidence) so it's useful to have worked out your income, expenditure and debts before starting the application process.
